The scallop shell is the traditional symbol of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. This route crosses Cornwall on the Saint Michael’s Way from St. Uny Church, Lelant, to St. Michael’s Mount near Penzance. It is a route followed by Irish, Welsh and Cornish pilgrims, which avoids the stormy seas around Land’s End and allows them to visit the important shrine of St. Michael’s Mount before heading to Spain.
